Downtown Lynchburg
Discover the architectural delights and rich history of downtown Lynchburg—at the turn of the century we were one of the wealthiest cities in the nation, with fortunes built on trade, tobacco, and manufacturing. As a major railroad and medical center, it was here that General Lee was heading before surrendering at nearby Appomattox.
You can enjoy the unique architecture of the historic districts, visit Monument Terrace, or be awed by the dramatic steeples of 100-year old churches. Catch an evening theater performance, visit one of our art galler- ies or museums, dine at our restaurants and then enjoy a pleasant stay at one of our hotels. Near downtown you can tour Civil War sites, historic cemeteries, muse- ums, and homes of Lynchburg’s most famous citizens. Spend some time learning our rich history or enjoy a fun afternoon shopping at our many antique stores.
Downtown Lynchburg now hosts children’s activities, festivals, concerts, outdoor movies and cultural events throughout the year. For more information about events, log on to www.downtownlynchburg.com.
As you tour downtown or stroll along the James River on our sun-dappled nature trail you’ll see why Thomas Jefferson called Lynchburg “The most interesting spot in the state.”
