This photograph in Tucker Clark’s album looks north from Federal Street to houses on Eighth Street.
I found Augustine Leftwich in the 600 block of Federal Street in a city directory. Gray’s 1877 Map of Lynchburg clearly shows Leftwich’s large, ca. 1817 house taking up almost half a block at 614 Federal, and the block downhill—bor- dered by Seventh, Eighth, Harrison, and Federal Streets—is labeled “Aug. Left- wich” as well. That downhill block shows eleven houses fronting on Harrison Street and six on Eighth Street, with streams running down both streets. A look at
the Sanborn map from 1895 shows
even more detail. Here the houses along Harrison Street are labeled “Negro Tene- ments.” The detail of this map indicates the heights and shapes of the buildings and even shows the porches protruding into Harrison Street. It appears that the houses in the photo from Tucker Clark’s album are on Eighth Street viewed from Federal Street. The Gutmann drawing appears to depict the “Negro Tenements” on Harrison Street viewed from Eighth Street.
Further corroboration was found in the library at E. C. Glass High School
