Choosing what appeared on a map to be the shorter route, Confederate troops at- tempted to pull guns and caissons up this Eighth Street hill. The men and horses were exhausted by the steepness and became stalled until fresh reinforcements arrived to pull the guns up the hill to the battle on June 17, 1864. The Allied Arts Building now stands on the site to the right.
