Endeavoring to find the right person to whom we should dedicate this yearbook was a difficult task, espe- cially in a community of devoted and caring people such as ours. After much deliberation, we have chosen to dedicate the 1978-79 Vestige to Mr. Harold Irvin Donnelly, the Assis- tant Headmaster at VES since 1974. Mr. Donnelly came to VES with an impressive set of credentials, having had some thirty years of experience as a teacher, administrator and headmaster at other schools. A gra- duate of Deerfield Academy and Princeton University, he also earned a Masters degree in Education at the University of Virginia. His teaching career began at Deerfield Academy, and after a year there, he moved on to Woodberry Forest where he taught, coached, and held adminis- trative positions for sixteen years. In
1964 he accepted the headmaster- ship at Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
When Sandy Ainslie became Head- master in 1974, Harold Donnelly left Spartanburg and took the position of Assistant Headmaster here. Since that time, he has helped increase the variety of academic offerings, establishing numerous electives and the Core Program. His administra- tive responsibilities have varied from year to year, but he has been consis- tently concerned with college selec- tion for seniors. His knowledge of colleges and universities, and his wisdom and good judgement in ad- vising students on where to apply have endeared him to each senior class.
The Senior Class of 1979 wishes to thank Harold Donnelly for all the time and energy he has spent help- ing each of us to make realistic choices for our futures. By dedicat- ing this yearbook to him, we hope he will understand how much we appre- ciate his efforts..
