letterman in football; baseball and basket- ball. After graduating in 1957, he returned to North Carolina to attend what he refers to as "The University" - UNC. While at UNC he was fraternity brothers with Sandy Ainslie. When Mr. Ainslie accepted the po- sition of Headmaster at VES, he asked Mr. Watkins to come back and work. For that reason and because of his love for the school, he came back in 1974. He has been working at VES for fourteen years. He has served as Alumni Secretary and Director of Development for the School. This year he is special assistant to the Headmaster. Dur- ing Mr. Watkins' time here, the annual
giving has risen from 45,000 dollars to 300,000 dollars. Alumni participation has grown from 17% to 45%. Trustee support has grown from 2,000 dollars to over 42,000 dollars on an annual basis. However, capital support is where he has had his greatest success. Since he has been here, over 5 million dollars has been pledged to the school. "There are very few graduates of VES that love the school as much as Butch does," Mr. Zimmer states. He is married to Kathy Watkins, who is our school's consulting psychologist. He has two children, William and Holly. In appre- ciation for the years of service to and love of VES, we dedicate the 1988 Vestige to Mr. William Henry Watkins IV.
