''Babes''
I always thought that English teachers were full ofdusty pedantry, lost to literary arcana and granderian methods ofteaching. "Babes" is the absolute opposite to the schol- ar who prefers books to people, as both his classes and his teachings encourage us to be ourselves, and not pla- giarize models of other authors. Twenty years of directing school plays, constant interest showing the art world, commitment to advisees, and, let's face it, some damn good teaching have made Mr. Jim Hopkins an "institution". I do not think that he is really an institution. " Babes" is too human for that. To myself, he is an Amer- ican gentleman-dignified, erudite, in short, a sociable chap and as cool as a teacher can be. Umpteen post-graduate degrees all reward the quality of his intellect, but the school can rarely show proper appreciation of his friendly decency. It is hoped that this yearbook will be in some way an ammends, and we dedicate it to Mr. Hopkins, to whom we give our wholehearted thanks.
