The photos from the Lynchburg News & Advance are some of the clearest and most descriptive of all of the Lynchburg photos. Until the 1950s, the newspapers did not necessarily have photographers on staff, but used the resources of freelancers. Even so, they did have the best-kept photo library in the city, with files on the events of the day, and on local people—famous, infamous, and those enjoying their 15-minutes of fame.

 

Some of the older files have been transferred to the Jones Memorial Library for better archival storage.  Others remain in numerous filing cabinets and boxes at the News office. We are thankful to the News for allowing us to share many of them here.
