REPORT OF STREET COMMITTEE. To the Pre8ident and Jfembrrs
of the Council of t!Le Cif!J of L!Jnchburg:
The Committee on Streets re~pectfully submit the following as their annual report. There was no ,:peeified amount authorized by tho Council to be expended during tho past year by the Street Com- mittee, consequently, all that has been expended by them w~ by appropriations made by the Council from time to time, as necessity
demanded.
The amount expended for the year ending 31st )larch, 1868, and
for the months of A.pril and May, 1868, by your Committee, is S7,122 36; and the amount received by appropriations and other sourceg is $7,215 00-leaving n balance in the chairman's hands of S!l2 64, which is subject to your order. l!'or particulars reference is wade to the vouchers covering the year's operations, numbering from 1 to 111 inclusive which will show how, and when the same waa
expended.
In the month of September, 1867, your Committee, by an order
of Council, concelled the contract previously made with Dennis Sul- livan, to keep the streets in order for twelve months ending 31st December, 1867, (under what was known as the Contract Syatem), by tho employment of James B. Ley, at a Mlary of &65 00 per month, to superintend the laborers employed to keep the streets in order,
and the purchase of horses, carts, wagon and neccgsary tools to do the same, at tho expense of the City. This syl'tem (the one now in use) of keeping the streets in order, they most respectfully recom- mend to the Council, to continue, for tho greatest and best of rea- sons, the saving ofrnone!J to the ( if!J. 'fhoy are clearly of opinion that
a saving of 40 to 50 per cent. for ordinary repairs can be saved by this modo.
