“Faro” in Prison

LYNCH’S FERRY
By common consent, it seemed that a certain part of the open court was set aside for gaming purposes. It made no difference how severe the weather was, these gaming tables were always in full blast. A man could amuse himself with any game at cards that he desired. There were “farrow bank,” “chuck-a-luck,” “brag,” “enchure,” “draw poker,” “straight poker,” “seven- up,” “five-up,” and most prominent of all, a French game, pronounced in Fort Delaware “veng-tu-aug,” meaning twenty-one.
—Captain D. Augustus Dickert
The fascination for games of chance is wonderful, and the utter recklessness with which some men will venture their last “check” is really painful to behold.
We find it difficult to sleep at night in our new quarters, so many noisy men remain awake, gambling, talking, swearing and walking about. Loud bursts of laughter and horrid oaths sometimes arouse and startle us.
— Captain Robert E. Park
