This is Ninth Street below Main Street. Through the smoke you can see the bridge crossing the James River to Madison Heights. On the far left is the side of the Lynch building which stood at the corner of Ninth and Main streets (where Bank of the James is now). On the left side of Ninth were a restaurant, Molteni Saloon, J.W. Lichtenstein, clothier, and several groceries. On the right were several groceries, Mayo’s Restaurant, and saloons, according to the 1898 City Directory.
