E. W. Harvey’s Store stood at the intersection of Wards Road and Fort Av-
enue. More recently the site has housed the old Kroger store and now a CVS pharmacy. In this photo, Fort Avenue is seen in the foreground going by the right side of the building, and Wards Road is seen at the left between the well and the store. The sign advertises “Staple and Fancy Groceries, Dry Goods & Notions, Liquors and Beer.” Another sign reads “FiRST & LAST CHANCE, COOL BEER.” This referred to the store being the last stop on the stagecoach run before the overnight stop in Bedford on its two-day trip to Roanoke. The Harvey family, who lived upstairs, poses on the porch in this 1899 photo.
