The school's acting chaplain, Dr. Appleton Grannis, was born in Utica, New York. He attended Columbia University for four years followed by three years at the New York General Theological Seminary.
His first services were performed at St. Michael's Church, N.Y., Trinity Church, Boston, and at Columbia
University. For 28 years Dr. Grannis served as Rector of Old St. Ann's Church of Lowell, Mass., having the distinction of being one of only three rectors in I 16 years.
In 1934 he was called to St. Paul's American Church in Rome, Italy, as a minister for the Americans there. A narrow escape was mdde when Ambassador Phelps advised him to return to the U. S. ten days before the war broke out.
The South was favored by Dr. Grannis when he returned to serve at Christ Church in Martinsville, Va., and at Christ Church in Raleigh, N.C.
Mr. laurence Hamilton Forsyth is anoldV.E.S.boyof1937. ABed- ford history class lost him to V. E. S. this year, and now he resides on the mighty second west, teaching the same ol' subject.
While attending V. E. S., he parti- cipated in football, basketball, and Varsity track. He also was the managing editor of The Meteor and a counselor.
From V. E. S. Mr. Forsyth went to the University of Virginia where he was a member of many assorted or- ganizations of high standing.
Serving Uncle Sam, he saw duty in North Africa, Italy, France, and Ger- many. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
The following year he received his A. B. in history.

his year is the Vestry. Besides the Honor Committee, it contains Paul Taylor, Scott Taylor, and Jack Pan- coast, elected by the student body.
The three unlucky boys doomed to slave over dances this year are Paul Taylor, chairman; Scott Taylor, and Jack Pancoast.

Paint and Polish
As usual the summer vacation was pent in repairing the damage left over from the winter campaign. In addition to this a number of new im- provements have been added to
beautify the school.
The chapel was painted and
polished until it shines. The walls are light blue, the ceiling white, the lights clear and adequate. A friend

The appearance of the school will be greatly helped by the beautiful azalea shrubs given by Mr. G. B. Lamar of Lynchburg. The ditches have been dug on the south and east s1des of the main building and the ~hrubs will be planted in the near future.

The new members of faculty and staff include suppliers of sustenance for the spirit, the mind, and the body. The acting chaplain, the Rev. Apple- ton Grannis, D. D., and his assistant in religious instruction, the Rev. Richard Munger Shaeffer, represent the spiritual side. Mr. Lawrence W. Forsyth covers the purely intellectual aspects; while last, but by no means least, comes Miss Margaret D. Sanders, who promises to supply the
